UMBRELLA GALLERY

WOVEN NARRATIVE is a solo art exhibition by Dallas-based artist Paulette Martsolf.

“Portrayed in the abstract, my work focuses on texture, pattern and color. I utilize a combination of processes, painting, weaving and sewing various papers in layers which I stretch onto boards or sculpt into forms.

In creating these works, I often derive inspiration from landscapes and the environment, expressing a sense of movement through form and color. Growing up in Newfoundland, some of the works speak to more personal childhood stories.

Decades as an independent fashion designer working all aspects of the business from patternmaking, sewing and retailing women’s clothing informs the 2D and 3D work I do today.

These works embrace both personal growth and universal histories.”

About the Artist

Paulette Martsolf

My artwork is a reflection of the sensorial curves that undulate across the paper, inspired by the beauty of the female form. Imagination and fantasy drive the energy behind each piece, with the paint meeting the paper in a dance of creation. As a former fashion designer, my decades of experience in the industry inform my 2D and 3D work, allowing me to weave together elements of painting, cutting, sculpting, and sewing.

Childhood memories from Newfoundland, combined with my current life in Texas, shape my artistic process. I draw inspiration from the past, incorporating elements of decayed objects and old textiles into my contemporary work. My love of textiles shines through in my technique, where I weave paper and tyvek to create textile-like artworks and add texture reminiscent of fabric. Each piece is a unique blend of past and present, evoking a sense of elegance and beauty in art.

For me, art is not just a means of expression, but a way to capture moments in time and bring them to life in a tangible form. Through my work, I strive to invent new techniques and push the boundaries of what is possible in art. Join me on this journey of creativity and exploration, where elegance meets innovation in every brushstroke and weave.
